Frequently Asked Questions
How and where can I obtain a boating certificate to satisfy NYS Law.
In New York State, as of January 1, 2025, all operators of motorized vessels, regardless of age, are required to have a boating safety certificate. This requirement, part of Brianna’s Law, applies to anyone operating a boat with an engine on New York waterways. Motorized vessels only: Operators of non-motorized boats like canoes and kayaks are not required to have a certificate. Safety course required: To get the certificate, boaters must complete an approved boating safety course, either online or in person. How can I get a replacement boater education certificate if I lost my original?
If the course you took was with a United States Power Squadron affiliated local Squadron, the USPS can check their records to see if they have on file a record of you passing one of their approved courses. The USPS Headquarters can be reached at 888-367-8777 and follow the prompts for more information and to request a duplicate. If the course you took was conducted by NYS Parks and Recreation, you may search for a replacement card by visiting https://ilostmycard.com/ and entering the information requested. Unfortunately, if either of these two sources is unable to locate your credentials, you will be required to take another boating course to obtain a certificate.
What is and what will a Vessel Safety Check provide me?
A USPS (United States Power Squadrons) Vessel Safety Check is a free, courtesy examination of a vessel/boat to ensure it meets federal and state safety regulations. It’s conducted by certified vessel examiners who are members of the USPS or the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. The goal is to help boaters ensure their vessels are safe and compliant, not to issue citations. The primary aim is to educate boaters about safety and encourage compliance with regulations. Convenient and flexible: Checks can be scheduled at a mutually convenient time and place, such as at the dock, launch ramp, or even at the boat owner’s home. What’s checked: The exam covers essential safety equipment and compliance with regulations, including registration, navigation lights, life jackets, fire extinguishers, and more. Passing the check: If the boat passes the check, the owner receives a Coast Guard Auxiliary decal indicating compliance for that year. What if my boat does not pass?: If the boat doesn’t pass, the examiner provides a written report detailing the necessary corrections.
